Unable to Build Mono

Vishnu Kalapur

Hello there,

I am currently working on security features of Mono Framework for which I Need to build the mono sources. I followed the steps mentioned on the Website http://www.mono-project.com/docs/compiling-mono/windows/ . I was successful in Building the „mono.sln“ in mono/msvc Directory which was stated in the documentation. Unfortunately, I was not able to build the „net_4_x.sln“ in the mono directory. I want to build this solution file because I would like to perform some static Analysis (generate call graph from an algorithm) on ONLY some of the Projects in net_4_x.sln. I also tried building the „corelib-net_4_x“ Project from net_4_x.sln which was not dependent on any other Projects and is the start Project. Unfortunately, I was not succesful in that as well. I am attaching the screenshot of the error. It would be very kind if someone could  help me with this issue.

It looks like you didn't clone the submodules.

Run "git submodule update --init --recursive".

Re: Unable to Build Mono

Vishnu Kalapur

Hi Alex,

Thank you for the reply. I downloaded the submodules and tried the whole process again. Those errors are gone but, now I get some strange compilation errors (Syntax errors)when I compile in Visual Studio 2015 Update 3. I have not modified anything in the sources. I would be thankful if I get any insights into it. I strongly believe that the source code on Github is syntax error free. I have attached a snapshot of the errors as it might help.

We rely on newer C#7 features that don't work with the C# compiler included in VS2015, you'll need to upgrade to VS2017 (Community edition is fine).

Re: Unable to Build Mono

Hi Axel,

Sorry to bother again. I changed the c# language version to 7 and I again get a list of new errors. Some dlls are missing in mono\mcs\class\lib\net_4_x-win32\.

Vishnu

Hmm, it might be that compiling with net_4_x.sln is broken at the moment (it is a work in progress, our recommended approach for building Mono are the Makefiles).

Hi Vishnu,

Can you provide the stdout from those failed build commands? If you go to the Output tab in VS2017 and select ‘show output from: build’ the stdout will be near where the failed build step is.

If you’ve already built mono successfully using Cygwin, my guess is that mono is not being located to run those commands (due to not being in PATH) but I’m surprised that the exit code is different between culevel and Apigen.

Another option is to change the project settings for Apigen so that it builds in a .net framework compatible way, and change the build steps to run it directly – but that shouldn’t be necessary if you have a mono.exe.

Hi Katelyn,

Thank you for the help. I have attached the stdout from the failed build commands in the text file. I have already built the mono using cygwin and added the mono in path as well.

Vishnu

Re: Unable to Build Mono

Ludovic Henry (XAMARIN) via Mono-devel-list

I’m not certain what could be wrong with the apigen build step – there is no error output – but the culevel failures are because culevel.exe was not built. You should check to see whether it isn’t being compiled for some reason. It should be in the .sln file for all the assemblies.

Subject: RE: [Mono-dev] Unable to Build Mono

Hi Katelyn,

Thank you for the help. I have attached the stdout from the failed build commands in the text file. I have already built the mono using cygwin and added the mono in path as well.

Regards,

Vishnu

Re: Unable to Build Mono

Vishnu Kalapur

Hi,

Once again thank you for the help. I was successful I building it but, only after changing the solution properties such that those projects do not build. As of now, it is fine for me if those projects are not built.

I’m not certain what could be wrong with the apigen build step – there is no error output – but the culevel failures are because culevel.exe was not built. You should check to see whether it isn’t being compiled for some reason. It should be in the .sln file for all the assemblies.

Hi,

The issue was not completely solved. I have got a temporary solution to disable certain projects in the project and build the solution. But, this might be a problem for me some time later.

Vishnu

Hello Webafrican,

Thank you for your email.

We sincerely apologize for not getting back to you sooner, due to migration to a new email system for improved customer interaction an unforeseen error

caused emails to be assigned to the incorrect departments and queues.

Due to the 1000's of customer emails was either lost, duplicated or assigned to a spam queue which has led to queries

being unattended or customers not being replied to.

Our engineers have resolved the issue, but the massive amount of emails that was left made it impossible that we would be able to attend all of the

tickets in an acceptable timeframe individually, most of which was resolved already.

We have thus decided it would be prudent to close all email tickets to make it manageable and easier to keep track of still existing issues.

We thus kindly ask that if your issue is unresolved or unattended to please reply to this email so that we can take action on it.

Once again we would like to apologize for any  inconvenience and frustration caused, this was an unfortunate and miscalculated glitch in the system that was rectified.

Kind regards,

Webafrica
